Limit the results of the first query?

I’ve been working on a side project, and have algolia set up to handle search on my jekyll site at

I was able to hide the first query results using the searchFunction, but now I am thinking about how to better handle this.

Let’s say in the future I have 1000+ posts on the site. My pages will contain a link to every page in the index? Or whatever value I set for the hits per page limit? Even though it is hidden with css, I worry about the site architecture I am presenting to Googlebot.

Is it possible to show zero results on the initial query?
